Even after years on the market, folding smartphones have not lost the charm of curious niche products. When it comes to the form factor, however, favourites emerge. With the Mate X2, Huawei leaves the path of the first model and follows Samsung.
For manufacturers, folding smartphones are primarily prestige projects that show what is currently possible. This special status has not changed even years after the first models were introduced. With the Mate X2, Huawei is again delivering high-end hardware internally, but it makes it much less spectacular in terms of design than the first model. While there was still a single flexible display on the outside of the Mate Xs, the Mate X2 is exactly the same as Samsung took with the Galaxy Fold.
When folded, the main display is on the inside and cannot be used – but is of course much better protected. Another display is installed on the front for use in this state. Huawei offers an 8-inch display with 2480 x 2200 pixels for the Mate X2. The second display shows 2700 x 1160 pixels on 6.45 inches. In both cases, OLED panels with a variable 90 Hertz refresh rate are used.
A closer look at the structure shows that Huawei, unlike Samsung, does not design the two halves of the device symmetrically, but rather thins the side with the additional display to a thickness of only 4.4 millimetres. This should shift the focus closer to the natural stopping point, so the device lies better in the hand, according to the developers. At 295 grams, you definitely treat yourself to a little more weight than the Galaxy Z Fold2 at 282 grams. We have then summarized the most important hardware specs in a table, but a German launch is not in sight for the time being.
