Samsung Promises 4 Years Updates For Galaxy Devices

The update situation is chronically bad under Android. Samsung is preparing to become a prime example of recovery here. As the company now announces, they want to provide all Galaxy devices with security updates for at least four years.

When it comes to updates to Android, more than 13 years after the first version was released, the situation remains critical. The real flood of devices also means that providers often only deliver a few real updates and are in no hurry to close security gaps. Samsung is certain that it can score points with customers here with a different approach. Accordingly, it has become “completely normal” that users want to keep their devices longer, which is why the decision was made to extend the support in principle.

“Devices now receive regular security updates for at least four years after the phone was first released,” the company said in its statement. According to the manufacturer, this promise also applies to all Galaxy products that have been on the market since 2019 and includes the Z, S, Note, A, M, XCover and Tab series. As before, however, the company reserves the right that the availability of updates may vary depending on the device and market.

Samsung also maintains the rhythm of the updates and, depending on the model and age of the device, provides monthly or quarterly security patches – the official Security Updates page lists here company has an overview of the status of its own device. Previously, Samsung had usually switched to quarterly updates two years after the device was released. How this behaves with the extended update period is not explained in detail for the announcement.
