Apple has rolled out new products during the live event yesterday. In addition to the “small” iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12, Apple has also presented the new iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The two new flagship smartphones have recently brought 5G with them and for the first time also have an integrated Lidar sensor for the cameras.
Visually, the new iPhone 12 Pro models correspond to what the smaller versions also offer: They have a completely flat design, have a notch at the top of the screen and all have an integrated 5G modem. At the same time, the devices are also waterproof and have the option of attaching accessory products to the back using “MagSafe” magnets.
The iPhone 12 Pro has a 6.1-inch display with 2532 x 1170 pixels, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max now has a 6.7-inch display, which is almost the same size as the previous models. The resolution of the OLED screen called “Super Retina XDR” is given as 2778 x 1284 pixels, with Apple promising a maximum brightness of 800 and even up to 1200 candelas. HDR and maximum color space coverage are of course back on board.
With the Apple A14 Bionic, the latest high-end ARM-based SOC is also installed here, which is manufactured on a 5-nanometer scale and has six computing cores. The graphics unit is supposed to outperform the competition by a full 50 percent and Apple is of course also installing dedicated computing units for tasks in the field of artificial intelligence and image processing.
The cameras get proven technology, which Apple combines with new technology. There is an ultra-wide-angle camera with 12 megapixels and an f / 2.4 aperture as well as a 120-degree field of view. The main camera in the Max model has an edge length of the sensor pixels of 1.7 micrometers and offers a maximum aperture size of f / 1.6. There is also an optical image stabilizer and integrated autofocus technology.
In addition, Apple has integrated a zoom lens with four times or five times (Max model) optical magnification into its new high-end iPhone 12 models, whereby the 12-megapixel sensor used for this also has an optical image stabilizer to prevent wobbling. Apple uses what is known as sensor-shift technology, as can also be found inexpensive digital cameras.
Similar to the current iPad Pro tablets, Apple is also installing a lidar sensor for the first time, which is able to detect objects in space like radar. It measures how long light needs to be reflected by objects in the room. This not only enables depth effects to be achieved but also allows virtual objects to be precisely positioned in space.
At the same time, the lidar sensor is also used to improve the autofocus system for photos and videos – because Apple can easily and quickly determine the distance to objects in the room, even when there is hardly any light. Overall, the new sensor should provide a significant improvement in the photo and video performance, while at the same time creating new technical possibilities.
The new iPhone Pro models are also said to be significantly more stable than their predecessors and should be optimally protected against scratches and damage thanks to the “Ceramic Shield” on the front. With IP68 certification, the devices are also protected against water and dust. With the magnets under the glass cover on the back, the devices are also suitable for use with various new accessory products.
The customer can choose between models with 128, 256, or 512 gigabytes of internal memory. Pre-orders should be possible from October 16, until October 23, when they will be available in stores. In Germany, the devices cost at least 1120 or 1217.50 euros in the models with the smallest internal memory.
