Amazon Shutting Down Its Android App Store: Here’s What You Need to Know

Amazon has officially announced its decision to shut down the Amazon App Store for Android smartphones. Moving forward, developers will no longer be able to list new applications on the platform. The Amazon App Store, first launched in 2011 as an alternative to the Google Play Store, is now being retired in favor of focusing on Amazon’s own devices.

In a statement, Amazon explained that the majority of its customers use the App Store on Amazon devices, such as Fire tablets and Fire TVs. As a result, the company plans to channel its efforts into improving the experience for users in these ecosystems.

Amazon App Store Will Remain on Amazon Devices

While the app store is being discontinued on Android smartphones, it will still be accessible on Amazon-branded devices, including Fire tablets and Fire TVs. This ensures that users of Amazon’s hardware can continue to download and use apps as normal.

In addition to this decision, Amazon has also announced changes to its digital currency program, Amazon Coins. Users will no longer be able to use Coins after August 20, and any unused Coins in user accounts will be refunded. Amazon Coins were previously used to purchase apps and games through the App Store.

Not the First Time Amazon Has Retired App Store Support

This isn’t the first time Amazon has scaled back its App Store operations. In 2024, the company revealed that support for the App Store on Windows devices would end on March 5, 2025. These moves indicate a shift in Amazon’s strategy, focusing more on its own ecosystem rather than competing in broader app marketplaces.

Amazon’s Future Plans

Even as it phases out parts of its app ecosystem, Amazon has plenty of exciting plans for its other services. In the Indian market, the company is expanding its Prime Video content library, offering users more options to explore. There are also hints of upgrades to Amazon’s Gaming service, which has shown promise in the past.
