The first beta of iOS 18.4 is out, and it introduces a subtle yet useful tweak for CarPlay users.
In this update, CarPlay now supports a third row of icons, up from the previous two. However, this feature is only available for vehicles with larger center displays. For instance, a MacRumors Forums member spotted the change in a Toyota Tundra, which offers screens as large as 14 inches. Additionally, on some wider displays, CarPlay now shows five columns of icons instead of the usual four.
During our testing, CarPlay still displayed two rows of four icons on a Honda Civic with a 9-inch screen. So, the number of icons depends on the size of your car’s screen.
Though this is a minor update, having more icons visible on larger displays improves the user experience. It means drivers can access more apps more quickly without having to swipe through multiple pages.
After beta testing wraps up, iOS 18.4 is expected to launch publicly in early April. Keep an eye out for this quality-of-life improvement in Apple’s phone mirroring system!
