AMD announced the next generation of its desktop graphics cards

As of today, two new graphics cards for desktops have been announced by AMD. The two new flagship products are the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and the RX 7900 XT.

The two new graphics cards are based on RDNA 3 architecture. RDNA 3 architecture comprises the new 7000 series GPU from AMD. They are considered to be the first chiplet-based designs in the world.

Talking about its structure, the GPU die has two main components. These are:

  1. Graphics Compute Die or the GCD: built on a 5nm process
  2. Memory Cache Die or the MCD: built on a 6nm process

A switch is linked with the chiplet-based design. It allows AMD to mix and match parts. Thus, generating different configurations. Further, it allows the use of distinct manufacturing processes for each component. Therefore, better yield is generated as of smaller parts. Compared to a large monolithic die. Additionally saving the cost and provides efficiency.

The new GCD

The new GCD features a new display engine and a unique dual media engine. It also features the new RDNA 3 compute units. Each unit has the following characteristics:

  • 1.5x VGPR (Vector General Purpose Register),
  • 64 dual-issue stream processors with 2x instruction issue rate
  • 2x AI accelerators with 2.7x performance
  • 2nd Gen RT accelerator with 50% more performance per CU

The new MCD

It features:

  • 64-bit memory controller
  • 2nd Gen Infinity Cache [2.7x peak memory bandwidth]

Both cards support the

a. new DisplayPort 2.1 [standard limited to the intermediary UHBR 13.5 bandwidth of 54Gbps]

b. a new media engine [encode/decode for AVC/HEVC and 8K60 AV1 encode/decode]

As per the news, the two new cards will be available in mid-December.
