Android Manufacturers Will Not Integrate Face ID in Their Devices

Face IDs and in-display fingerprint sensors are the most recent emerging trend in the smartphone industry with almost every smartphone firm engaged in integrating the technology into their phones. However, the Android makers have limited the usage of this trend as they have taken the decision to not incorporate the Face ID technology in their phones but would only be integrating the in-display sensors.

As per a report of the DigiTimes, the supply chain sources informed that presently the Android phone makers are speeding towards the integration of the in-display fingerprint sensors in their mobile phones and are avoiding the remaking of the iPhone X’s 3D sensor-based face recognition modules for Android as they are way too expensive.

The Android phone manufacturers are apparently looking forward towards the implementation of the Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensors instead of the 3D face recognition technology which was initially witnessed in the iPhone X owing to the financial constraints.

Additionally, the infrared depth-sensing facial recognition system present in the iPhone X is a lot costlier to replicate for the Android devices.

The per unit cost of the TrueDepth 3D sensor’s hardware and software is around $60, which is seriously expensive, especially when the devices are needed to be manufactured in larger quantities.

According to the reports, Samsung’s newest upcoming Galaxy Note 9 and Huawei’s upcoming Mate 11 would be coming in with the in-display fingerprint sensors.

Vivo is the only brand till so far that is to launch the technology in its Vivo X20 Plus UD.
