Android users will soon have access to Gmail’s unsubscribe feature

Gmail’s web interface has long had a button in the header that allows users to swiftly unsubscribe from undesired bulk mailings. Google is now providing that same choice a prominent spot in its Gmail Android app, just after it underwent a design makeover to make it more noticeable.

The new unsubscribe button in Gmail for Android, as in the web interface, is located right at the top of emails. When pressed, a popup box asks for confirmation or takes you to the newsletter’s unsubscribe page. This is determined by how the publisher incorporated the unsubscribe feature in their newsletter.

The unsubscribe option, in classic Google form, is not yet available to everyone. Despite utilizing the latest version of the app (2023.11.26) and the same Google account, we could see the Unsubscribe Button on a Pixel 8 Pro but not on an Honor phone. The button is most likely being rolled out as a server-side switch. If the button doesn’t appear for you right away, you may go to the old school technique and touch the Unsubscribe option on the top overflow menu in the app bar.

Google had made Unsubscribe more accessible in Gmail for the web in December. The choice now has a blue font, helping it stand out in the header. Google began working on this more prominent positioning in November 2023. Back then, app expert @AssembleDebug demonstrated the button’s appearance and functionality in a post on X. The tipster noticed another potential change since the button is already rolling out in stable version of Gmail for Android.

@AssembleDebug was able to activate secret flags in another post on X to allow a new Manage subscriptions area in the hamburger menu. This area is most likely designed to show all active email subscriptions, allowing you to easily decide which ones to keep and which to delete.

The unsubscribe option has long been present on both Gmail for the web and for Android, albeit it has never been as visible. The technological groundwork for an unsubscribe button in email clients was set in 1998, with syntax described in RFC 2369, while Gmail implemented the option more than a decade ago.
