Apple AirPods 2 Has Brilliant Sound With Out Lossless Audio

Airpods 2 pro

The AirPods Pro 2 has better sound but doesn’t yet support lossless audio. Apple employee Andersen explains why it is like that.

AirPods Pro 2 do not have lossless audio

With the introduction of the AirPods Pro 2, it became clear that the new generation of AirPods Pro does not support lossless audio either. This is despite multiple rumors that the AirPods Pro 2 would have a lossless Bluetooth function. Unfortunately, these rumors turned out to be untrue.

There is a major disadvantage to wireless audio because there is a lot of quality loss. Wireless audio files are made smaller, lowering the quality. With lossless audio, files become much smaller, so the quality does not deteriorate enormously. For example, your music or your telephone conversation will sound a lot better wirelessly with lossless audio.

AirPods Pro 2 provides better sound with the new design

The AirPods Pro 2 look almost identical in design to the first-generation AirPods Pro, but the ears have been completely redesigned on the inside. The microphone of the AirPods Pro 2 has been moved and the new AirPods Pro has only one opening left.

With this new design, the bass and noise reduction have been improved. One of the new features of the AirPods Pro 2 is ‘Adaptive Transparency’. This dampens loud noises in your environment. For example, you can still hear a loud siren, but much less loudly. Despite the good AirPods Pro 2 sound, lossless is unfortunately still missing.

Apple employee explains missing lossless audio

Esge Andersen, who has been with Apple for 11 years, explained to MacRumors why lossless support was not chosen. According to Andersen, it was not necessary to switch to lossless, because the new design of the earphones already greatly improves the sound. By improving the airflow in the AirPods Pro 2, the sound is less likely to be distorted and the sound quality is much better.

Reliability is also an important reason why lossless audio has not yet been chosen. Apple has never been interested in lossless before and it would be a risk to choose it now. By using the old AAC codec, which does not support lossless audio, this risk was avoided. Especially since the AirPods Pro 2 sound without lossless is already very good according to Andersen.

AirPods 3 with lossless audio?

The second-generation AirPods Pro has therefore not received lossless support, but it is likely that the third generation will get it. It took three years for the AirPods Pro to get a successor, so you have to wait a while for the AirPods Pro 3.

In these three years, Apple can experiment a lot with lossless audio, especially now that the new AirPods Max firmware already has an improved Bluetooth codec. With this codec, lossless audio comes to a lot closer, for both the AirPods Max and the Pro 3. Lossless support can thus become the new feature of the third-generation AirPods Pro.

AirPods Pro 2 Price Cut Is Attractive

Retailers have a recent price cut on Airpods Pro 2 which is quite attractive for users who were planning to buy the new one. The price is $197.99 all-time low during the black Friday sales. You may still be able to get it at the same price.
