A certain saturation is attested to the smartphone market, and Apple has also repeatedly corrected the production figures of its iPhones in recent years. Now, at least for the company from Cupertino, there is a clear upward trend.
The importance that the iPhone has for Apple can be easily read from a number: In the third quarter of fiscal 2020, sales of smartphones with the Apple logo were responsible for 44.3 percent of the company’s sales, according to Statista – at peak times this proportion was even almost 70 percent. In the past few years, Apple had not always been able to meet the sales figures and caused unrest in the market. The reaction: A reduction in production numbers in 2018. It is now becoming apparent that Apple is targeting significant increases in sales after having passed these troughs.
As Reuters reports, Apple wants to produce around 96 million iPhones in the first half of 2021 alone – this corresponds to an increase of a whopping 30 percent compared to the previous year. In addition to the new iPhone 12 family, the production of the iPhone 11 and SE should also be significantly increased. “A shortage of key components could jeopardize the goal,” the report said, citing people familiar with the matter.
According to current planning, Apple has similarly ambitious goals for the entire year 2021. According to Reuters, Apple tells its suppliers that a total of around 230 million iPhones will be produced. This would tie the group back to old record values. However, all of these figures are currently still objectives for Apple that can be adjusted again at any time. So it remains to be seen how demand will develop over the next year.
