Apple claims that the original 12-inch MacBook will become obsolete at the end of June

Yesterday we shared the news about two products from Apple that are rendered obsolete by the company. The devices in question are the Thunderbolt display and first-gen iPad Air. As of now, another product by the company has been labeled as obsolete. It is the original 12-inch MacBook that will become obsolete by the end of this month.

The source of this information is an internal memo that was acquired by MacRumors. It means that the laptop is not authorized for repairs or services at Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers. It’s been seven years since the company stopped the sales distribution of 12-inch MacBooks.

Apple classifies a product as technologically obsolete once more than seven years have passed since the company stopped distributing it for sale. The first 12-inch MacBook was retired in April 2016 for the sake of a second-generation device with better specifications, thus the laptop is more than seven years old.

Originally the 12-inch MacBook was unveiled in March 2015. It is a thin and light device that weighs just two pounds. Moreover, the 12-inch MacBook was the first-ever fanless notebook by the company. It was priced at $1,299. It featured integrated Intel graphics, a 1.1GHz dual-core Intel Core M processor, 8GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. It also included a USB-C port that served dual purposes i.e., charging port as well as data transfer. Additionally, it also featured an all-new Force Touch trackpad and a terraced battery architecture that made it possible to pack a bigger battery inside the small chassis of the laptop.

In addition to this, it was the first MacBook model by the company that featured Apple’s renowned butterfly switch keyboard design. Well, this keyboard has the potential to fail sometimes. For this reason, it was abandoned from the entire MacBook lineup after several complaints and lawsuits. The 12-inch MacBook received the last updates in June 2017, and it was terminated in July 2019.
