Shortly before the Apple event, the word had already been blown from the rooftops: with Mac Studio and Mac Studio Display, Apple now offers a powerful combination for professional users. The Mac Studio is reminiscent of a thick Mac Mini but offers much more power.
This year’s Apple Spring event brought another real innovation. The new desktop PC called Mac Studio and the new external monitor called Mac Studio Display are now available for pre-order from Apple. Both are perfectly matched and – especially the display – for the offered performance and (by Apple standards) relatively cheap.
The Mac Studio Mini PC is visually reminiscent of a Mac Mini twin pack. The user has the choice between the entry-level model with an M1 Max (from 2,299 euros) or the better equipped M1 Ultra version (from 4,599 euros). Even the M1 Max should eclipse the current Mac Pro in terms of performance. It comes with a 10-core processor, 24-core GPU, and the Apple 16-core Neural Engine, and can be ordered from 32GB of RAM and 512GB SSD.
The other configurations are available with up to 20 core CPUs, 64 core GPU, and 32 core Neural Engine plus up to 128 GB RAM and 8 TB SSD. Apple hasn’t skimped on ports this time around: In addition to two USB-C ports and an SDXC card slot on the front, there are four Thunderbolt 4 ports, two USB-A ports, an HDMI port, a 10 Gbit Ethernet port, and a classic 3.5mm headphone jack. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0 are supported. The tiny Mac Studio can support up to four Pro Display XDRs and a 4K TV, Apple says.
If the performance of the M1 model is not enough, the Mac Studio is also available with the newly introduced M1 Ultra chip. There, the smallest configuration has a 20-core processor, 48-core GPU, and 32-core Neural Engine with 64 GB ROM and 1 TB SSD. It goes up to Apple M1 Ultra with a 20-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 32-core Neural Engine, 128 GB RAM, and 8 TB SSD. If you configure this monster, you pay up to 9,199 euros.
The Mac Studio will launch shortly. Pre-orders are open, with delivery starting March 18. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said: “The Mac Studio ushers in a new era for the desktop, with an incredible performance from M1 Max and M1 Ultra, a wealth of connectivity and a compact design that delivers everything users need. have within reach.”
