Apple M2 Geekbench Score Confirms Apple Didn’t Exaggerate

At the opening of its WWDC developer conference, Apple made some big promises about the performance increases of the new M2 chip – the first data from real benchmark testing now shows that it was no exaggeration.

The new computers with the M2 SoC from Apple’s own development are not yet officially available and are subject to some secrecy until they go on sale. Nevertheless, the first results of the Geenbench 5 benchmark test have now reached the public, as have the colleagues of the American magazine Neowin report. There were a total of three test runs with the same system, dubbed the Mac 14.7, the new 13-inch MacBook Pro model.

In the single-threaded tests, the M2 scored points in the various runs between 1874 and 1919. It is not known which circumstances have changed leading to these fluctuations. The new Apple chip then achieved up to 8928 points in the multi-threaded area. Compared to the M1’s CPU test results, that’s an increase of 11.5 and 17 percent, respectively, roughly in line with the company’s announcements.

Graphics performance great

On the other hand, a look at the real test results in Geekbench 5 is exciting when it comes to graphics performance. Apple promised a 35 percent improvement in its WWDC keynote. However, in the metal test, 30,627 points were achieved, which corresponds to an increase of 42.5 percent over the approximately 21,500 points for the M1.

The test data shows that Apple’s marketing communications can be trusted here. However, such a test can only show roughly how the development is reflected in practice for the individual user – because here a lot depends on the task and of course also on which application is used.
