Apple M6 processors: TSMC delivers the first 2nm chips for new Macs

Apple is preparing a major milestone for laptops with the M6 ​​processor. A new MacBook Ultra is scheduled to appear in fall 2026, offering a touchscreen for the first time. Our own 5G modems also ensure long-term mobile connections.

Apple M6: The new chip age

After we already reported on initial plans for Apple’s next processors in our article from January 2026, the evidence is increasing. The group is expected to introduce new laptops with the M6 ​​chip in autumn 2026. The focus is on a newly developed high-end device, which is known in industry circles as the MacBook Ultra. The top model is intended to further blur the boundary between laptop and tablet. A slimmer case, an OLED display and a revised hinge are expected, which enables touchscreen input on a Mac for the first time.

Apple had long avoided this technology so as not to affect iPad sales. In view of changing usage requirements, there are now signs of a change in course.

Technical leap of two nanometers

Apple plans to use TSMC’s two-nanometer manufacturing. The WMCM process interlinks components such as CPU, GPU and RAM more closely and thus increases efficiency. This is intended to improve computing performance and battery life. Apple and TSMC work closely together to optimize production yield and heat development. Another innovation concerns mobile networking. How MacRumors reports, Apple plans to integrate its own 5G modems into laptops. This enables permanent connectivity via eSIM. The basis is the takeover of Intel’s modem division. The aim is to reduce dependencies on suppliers such as Qualcomm and to better coordinate hardware and software.

Increase in costs for upcoming models

The Pro models and the MacBook Ultra are scheduled to appear in 2026, with the MacBook Air expected to follow in March 2027. New technologies drive up costs. The high demand for memory chips for data centers is causing component prices to rise worldwide. Apple boss Tim Cook has already announced price adjustments for upcoming hardware. The current MacBook Air with M5 chip is available from Apple starting at 1199 euros.

A price increase is expected for the next generation. Initially, MacBook Ultra and Pro models are on the roadmap in fall 2026. According to current information, desktop computers such as iMac and Mac mini will follow at the end of 2026. The revised MacBook Air in spring 2027 should complete the generation.
