Apple Opens an Online Store on WeChat in China

WeChat is the famous Tencent-owned social media platform in China. As per the information shared by Reuters, the Cupertino-based tech firm Apple has opened its online store on the WeChat app. Apple Store will be hosted on WeChat via its mini-programs. The mini-programs on WeChat provide financial, e-commerce, and live-streaming services to the users.

Using the Apple Store on WeChat consumers will have access to several Apple products like iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Users who place their orders via WeChat will get free deliveries. Some users will be even eligible for three-hour delivery and Apple’s trade-in program. The move is consistent with Apple’s strategy of expanding its Chinese market by utilizing the social media channels that Chinese consumers are increasingly using for shopping.

According to Reuters information, Apple has its presence on Alibaba as well. Its service is available on Tmall online marketplace, Alibaba’s Group. JD.com is reportedly the second-largest online retailer in China and is the official reseller of Apple in the country. Besides this, the company hosted a live stream in China in May for marketing its products. It was an hour-long show that was conducted for the first time ever.

According to data from Counterpoint Research reported China’s smartphone sales in the first quarter decreased 5% year over year. It was the lowest first-quarter sales total for the country since 2014, reports Reuters. On the other hand, Apple was able to acquire a 19.9% share of the Chinese smartphone market in the same quarter. It was the biggest share for the company since 2014. Reportedly, Apple’s sales increased by 6% year on year.
