According to a report by the Taiwanese media Business Times, an industry insider revealed that Apple is currently developing its own GPU and will meet with you in the second half of 2021.
The GPU code-named Lifuka that Apple is developing is part of the Apple Silicon project and will be made using TSMC’s 5nm process. According to sources, the research and development process is relatively smooth. This new Lifuka GPU has better performance per watt, and computing performance will also be improved. The report also mentioned that the new GPU will bring a new technology called tile-based deferred rendering.
In fact, this technology has also appeared on Apple’s A4 chip before. It has been used from 2010 to 2017, and the PowerVR GPU in it has this technology. And this year, Apple also resumed cooperation with Imagination Technologies, a company of PowerVR GPU, allowing the former to use a lot of intellectual property rights of the latter. It now appears that the delayed rendering of blocks is part of Apple’s achievements from this cooperation.
If the news is true, then AMD’s GPU will be less attractive to Apple. After all, Apple has always wanted to build an ecosystem dominated by its own chips. From Apple’s abandoning of Intel’s processors, it can already be seen that they have to develop their own CPUs based on the ARM instruction set.
As for the CPU, the news also revealed that the A14X processor has been researched and developed, and TSMC’s 5nm production capacity in the fourth quarter was also contracted by Apple, and the A14X has the opportunity to start production as early as the end of the year. Affected by the ban, TSMC’s original production capacity reserved for Huawei has been occupied by other customers. If this rumored Lifuka GPU is true, then a considerable part of this production capacity should also be taken up by it.
