Apple just announced the extension of the Self Service Repair program to Mac laptops. US users will be able to purchase genuine Apple parts and repair tools beginning August 23, 2022. This service will arrive in Europe in the coming months.
Remember that in late April 2022, Apple finally announced the launch of its self-service repair program: Self Service Repair. Therefore, after the publication of repair manuals on a dedicated site, it is now possible to buy spare parts to repair your iPhone yourself, at least in the United States.
Indeed, the service will be available in Europe this fall. Good news, though, as Apple just confirmed the extension of its program to MacBook laptops. In reality, MacBook spare parts and repair tools are on sale in the US from Wednesday, August 23, 2022 via the platform Self-service repair shop.
“The Self Service Repair program for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro allows for more than a dozen repairs for every model, including display, top case and battery, trackpad, and that’s just the beginning,” Apple says. However, please note that only MacBooks with Apple Silicon chips are currently eligible for the program.
In other words, these are the MacBook Air 2020 M1, MacBook Pro M1 13″, MacBook Pro 14 2021 and MacBook Pro 16″ 2021. However, the Apple brand indicates that “additional models” will be added later to the list of eligible upcoming devices, such as the MacBook Air M2 for example. As for the prices, to say the least, doing the repairs yourself will not be the cheapest option in certain cases. Thereby, it costs $395 to replace the screen of his MacBook Air M1, $119 for the battery or just $14 for a USB port. As for the motherboardthe bill will fluctuate between $526 and $1406, while you have to pay $95 to get a replacement trackpad. Engaging a professional repair service involving certified technical teams using genuine Apple spare parts remains the safest and most reliable way to obtain repairs.
For users who still want to carry out repairs themselves, Apple offers a toolbox for rent for $49 a week. Note that the shipping is supported by the company. In addition, users have the option to return defective parts to Apple for refurbishment or recycling. In return, purchase credits are granted.
