Apple Rumored to Be Testing Foldable iPad Pro With Under-Display Face ID

Foldable iPad Pro Prototype Details
Rumors about a foldable iPad Pro have been circulating for a while, and a new report suggests that one of Apple’s prototypes includes under-display Face ID technology. According to Weibo-based leaker Digital Chat Station, Apple is testing an 18.8-inch foldable screen prototype. This device reportedly integrates Face ID components, such as the receiver and transmitter, into a “metal superstructure lens” for under-display facial recognition.
The leaker didn’t provide additional details about the prototype, but the concept of under-display Face ID is exciting, as it has been rumored for iPhones for years without becoming a reality.
Foldable Device: iPad or MacBook?
Speculation remains unclear about whether Apple’s foldable device will be an iPad or a MacBook. Both are possible options, depending on the operating system Apple ultimately chooses.
In 2027, analyst firm Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) predicts Apple will launch an 18.8-inch foldable iPad Pro with an OLED display. Meanwhile, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that LG plans to begin mass production of foldable display panels for devices like a 20.2-inch or 18.8-inch MacBook in late 2025.
A December report by The Wall Street Journal also mentioned Apple’s work on a larger foldable device. This product, described as “intended to serve as a laptop,” could expand to around 19 inches when unfolded.
Under-Display Face ID: A Long-Awaited Feature
While under-display Face ID has been rumored for iPhones for years, it hasn’t materialized yet. The latest rumor marks the first mention of this technology in connection with Apple’s foldable plans. If realized, this integration could represent a major step forward in Apple’s design evolution.
Foldable Plans Beyond iPads
Apple is reportedly exploring foldable devices beyond iPads. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has suggested a “giant” foldable iPad could debut in 2028, featuring a design free of visible creases. This would make the display appear as a seamless piece of glass.
Additionally, Apple is said to be working on a foldable iPhone with a crease-free display. Unlike the foldable iPad, this device would integrate Touch ID into the side button, similar to recent iPad Air and iPad mini models, due to internal space constraints. The foldable iPhone could launch as soon as late next year.
The future of foldable devices at Apple remains intriguing, with exciting innovations like under-display Face ID and crease-free displays potentially reshaping the company’s product lineup. Stay tuned for more updates as these rumors develop!
