Apple WWDC Starts Soon: what to expect next to iOS 16 and other software updates

At the start of Apple’s WWDC developer conference today, the group is expected to preview new versions of the operating system that will launch in the fall. But there are also rumors of new hardware. Apple’s annual “Worldwide Developers Conference” kicks off on Monday, June 6 at 6 p.m GMT with CEO Tim Cook’s keynote speech.

The keynote gives a first look at the new operating system updates: iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS 13, tvOS 16, and watchOS 9. There were already some hints about new features expected with this update.

iOS 16

Most iOS rumors have been very vague so we know very little about the OS update at this point. The new features would include a revised lock screen with background images that have “widget-like capabilities”. Extensive features for sleep monitoring and medication management had previously been leaked into the health app.

iOS 16 would bring the settings for an always-on display for the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, which are also expected in the fall. In addition, new Fitness+ workout types will be introduced, the notification function will be improved and a new music app will be launched for classical music lovers. You can read more about the expectations of the update in a separate article.

iPadOS 16

iPadOS 16 traditionally gets many of the new features introduced in iOS 16. As always, there are specially adapted extras for the iPad. Apple is said to have made it possible to use and control the iPad more like a laptop and less like a smartphone. As a result, according to the rumor mill, iPadOS 16 will be one of the biggest updates announced at WWDC this year. The update is said to offer a redesigned multitasking interface that makes it easier to switch between tasks and see which apps are open. Apple is also planning a much-improved multitasking experience.

macOS 13

Little was known about macOS 13 beforehand. Rumor has it that there’s a redesigned system settings interface that will be more in line with the Settings app on iPhones and iPad, with the update featuring individual settings per app. Little has changed in the Settings app for years. Besides improvements for all the standard apps like Mail, Safari, and Messages, there shouldn’t be anything completely new to see. The official name is also a mystery. Due to older Apple trademark filings for some California landmarks, the name “Mammoth” could now be the order of the day. Mammoth Mountain is a popular ski resort. watchOS 9

We could learn a lot about possible updates from the upcoming watchOS 9 in advance. Apple is therefore working on an improved power-saving mode that will allow the use of apps and functions while reducing battery consumption. There was also talk of advanced features for detecting atrial fibrillation and its precursors. Apple is also planning new workout types, additional running stats, new watch faces, and overall improved health and activity tracking.

tvOS 16

For tvOS, there should be a fairly minor update. Apple is now said to have focused on a feature that has been at the top of users’ wish lists: a new smart home connection to make it easier to manage devices on the home network.

New hardware theme

As far as new hardware is concerned, the rumor mill has really been running smoothly in recent days. It must already be certain that some devices with an “M2 Apple chip” will receive an update. A new MacBook Air, a 13-inch MacBook Pro and a Mac mini are expected. In addition, the release at Apple Authorized Dealer B&H Photo means Apple plans to introduce an essentially new category of hardware, the “Mac mini Tower”.

Until now, the Mac mini was only known as a desktop device that, for example, can be laid flat under a screen. The tower version, on the other hand, should be set up vertically and be a small Mac desktop PC. WWDC kicks off tonight at 6 p.m GMT. We will work out the news of the event for you afterwards.
