BMW Starts 31-inch “drive-in cinema” for the back seat

The Consumer Electronics Show CES 2022 is no longer just a trade fair for entertainment electronics because more and more car manufacturers are coming to Las Vegas to present innovations there. This also includes BMW and the Munich-based company presenting their Theater Screen at the CES. Many a vehicle has screens mounted on the front seats that are the size of a tablet – seven to ten inches – and are used to provide entertainment for the passengers in the rear, who are often underage. BMW is putting the crown on the topic of back seat entertainment because at CES 2022 the Bavarians presented a special screen that measures a whopping 31 inches and offers a resolution of up to 8K.

Unique “Drive-in cinema”

The aim is to offer the rear-seated passengers an entertainment experience like in the cinema: the panorama display has an aspect ratio of 32: 9, a resolution of 8,000,000 pixels, and essentially takes up the entire area between the two front seats. The BMW Theater Screen offers Smart TV functions, these are provided with the help of Amazon’s Fire TV interface or the associated software solution.

The inclination of the display can be varied using touch controls in the control menu of the in-car entertainment system; there are controls on both sides of the display. The ears shouldn’t be neglected either, because the sound of this home cinema on four wheels is provided by the Diamond Surround Sound System from Bowers & Wilkins. In the future, the BMW Theater Screen will actually be offered for production cars. It is currently unknown which models this will be possible and how much such a display will cost. This particular drive-in theater experience will certainly not be cheap. The well-funded target group for this luxury feature will probably not care about the price anyway.
