ChatGPT ads are not rolling out globally for now

Changed guidelines, wild speculation and annoyed users: Fear of global advertising in ChatGPT is growing rapidly. OpenAI is now stepping on the brakes and reassuring international users with a clear clarification on the rollout.

No global advertising in ChatGPT

OpenAI has dismissed speculation about a near-term global rollout of advertising in ChatGPT. The reason was an update of the data protection guidelines, in which the company now expressly points out advertising and the associated data processing. This led platforms like Reddit to believe that users outside the US could soon see ads in chat history. In fact, OpenAI has been playing advertising since February 9, 2026, but only in the USA.

Currently logged in users of the free version and the Go tariff are affected. The program will be introduced gradually to gain experience from practical use.

Clarification by OpenAI

How BleepingComputer Now reports, OpenAI explained when asked that the adjustment of the guidelines does not mean an immediate expansion of the advertising program. There is currently nothing new to share about the global rollout. The company sees the mention in the terms of use as legal preparation for international markets, not as a specific announcement. Users on Reddit had previously pointed out passages in the revised data protection declaration that describe the processing of user data for advertising purposes. Since the documents were updated worldwide, this was seen by some as an indication of an imminent launch of the ad campaign in Europe and other regions. While OpenAI confirmed the text adjustments, it emphasized that this does not mean a broader rollout of advertising.

Data protection and quality

Critics fear that advertising could affect the neutrality of the answers. Ads in a dialogue system are considered more personal and could subtly influence decisions. OpenAI emphasizes that advertisers have no direct influence on the content generated and that the core function of ChatGPT should remain unchanged. Users in Europe are currently subject to stricter data protection regulations, which make it difficult to quickly introduce personalized advertising. OpenAI must ensure that possible ad formats are compatible with European laws. Until then, the chatbot will remain ad-free for international users while the company gains further experience in the US market.
