Chatting without your own account on WhatsApp will soon be possible

Click on the link, enter your name and get started straight away: WhatsApp is currently testing guest access for people without an account. The conversation takes place temporarily in the browser, although Meta strictly limits the exchange to text messages.

Chats for contacts without an account

The messenger WhatsApp is apparently planning to change its access barriers. Meta is currently working on a feature for Android and iOS that will allow users to have conversations with people who don’t have a WhatsApp account themselves. Previously, installing the app and registering with a phone number were mandatory. With the new feature, users generate an invitation link directly on their smartphone.

The system allows sending via SMS, email or other channels to the desired conversation partner. The recipient does not need to register or download the application. Instead, a temporary chat window opens directly in the web browser of the mobile device or desktop computer. How WhatsApp Beta Info reported that the function is currently in the test phase for selected users. After clicking, guests decide whether to install the app or continue as a guest. In the second case, a session starts via WhatsApp Web. Security is maintained as guest chats are also end-to-end encrypted. WhatsApp used to require a permanent connection to the main device. The web interface now operates more independently, which is technically possible thanks to the new guest function. The system creates temporary keys for the encrypted chats. However, there is no verification of the guest’s identity. Anyone with the link can join the chat.

Functionality significantly reduced

Users should carefully consider who they are sending the invitation to. If forwarded, third parties could gain unauthorized access. Communication via guest access also differs greatly from usual use. Meta has implemented significant restrictions to maintain the incentive for a full account:

  • The exchange is limited purely to text messages.
  • Audio and video calls are technically not possible.
  • Guests cannot join group chats.
  • Media content such as photos, videos, documents or voice messages are not supported.

Blocking and privacy

One drawback concerns accessibility. Since guests don’t have an app installed, they won’t receive push notifications of new messages on their phone. You must actively check the browser window to see replies. In addition, the “lifespan” of the entertainment is limited. After ten days of inactivity, access automatically expires. If you want to continue the conversation, the host must generate a new link. Despite the open approach, registered users remain in control of the conversation. Guests must enter a name before chatting begins. Anonymity is also not guaranteed for the inviter, as the guest’s telephone number is displayed. If a user sends unwanted messages, the account can be blocked just like regular contacts. It is currently unclear when the function will leave the test phase.
