China’s gigantic WZ-X drone: new images reveal strange wings

New footage shows China’s giant WZ-X stealth drone with an unusual wing configuration. The aircraft was spotted again at China’s remote military base near the desert near Malan.

It has just become known that China is currently massively expanding its air force base in Lop Nur. Fresh images of the Chinese WZ-X stealth drone have now emerged that confirm an unusual wing configuration. The unmanned aerial vehicle, similar to the GJ-X, was spotted at Malan Air Base in the Xinjiang region. The images show a wide inner wing area that gradually merges into a much narrower outer section.

The design differs from well-known flying wing designs, such as those implemented by American engineers in the B-2 bomber. The WZ-X features a semi-serrated trailing edge, indicating a technical adjustment. A very long, narrow outer wing in theory reduces air resistance and promotes efficient flights at high altitudes. The spacious middle section, on the other hand, could offer space for fuel, high-resolution sensors and complex communication systems.

Two engines provide propulsion. They are supplied with air via a central inlet on the top. A grille over the air intake reduces the radar signature. However, the design also brings with it challenges in stealth technology. As TWZ reported, abrupt transitions in the wing geometry create additional edges. Such structures reflect radar waves more strongly depending on the angle of incidence, which can increase visibility on radar screens. Modern stealth aircraft therefore usually rely on large, continuous surfaces.

Dimensions and technical details

The dimensions of the WZ-X are enormous. The system has a span of around 52 meters and a length of around 14 meters. This makes the aircraft comparable to the American B-21 Raider bomber and significantly outperforms previous Chinese drones. The drone is designed as a so-called HALE system for sustained flights in the stratosphere and is therefore designed for the following performance values:

The design profile is primarily aimed at extensive reconnaissance and surveillance. In a military conflict, the aircraft is therefore likely to be used to locate enemy fleets and transmit precise target data for long-range missiles. The long flight duration also allows the system to continuously monitor large ocean areas in the Pacific.

Test flights at China’s Area 51

Testing of the WZ-X takes place at Malan Air Base. The base is located remotely in the desert and focuses on next-generation autonomous weapon systems. The dry environment offers optimal conditions for secret test flights far away from civilian flight routes. In addition to the WZ-X, the GJ-X drone also completes its test flights there. The Chinese government is also pushing forward the development of manned flying wings for different operational scenarios. This also includes the H-20 stealth bomber. However, official information about the military pilots is not available to the public.
