Hugging Face takeover: Mystery about Nvidia’s strange purchase price solved

Nvidia is taking over the AI platform Hugging Face for billions. The exact purchase price is no coincidence. The eye-catching number hides secret messages that have now been successfully decrypted.

Billion dollar deal with a secret message

On Thursday, Nvidia officially announced the acquisition of the artificial intelligence platform Hugging Face. The company changed hands for exactly 12,930,300,000 US dollars (around 11.13 billion euros). The eye-catching sum paid by CEO Jensen Huang’s company is no coincidence. Observers discovered after a tip from Hugging Face co-founder Thomas Wolf on X quickly find the hidden Easter eggs in the number sequence.

The first six digits of the purchase price are 129303. Converting the decimal number to a hexadecimal value results in 0x1F917. In the IT world, this is a fixture in the Unicode standard. The system assigns a unique number to each character used worldwide. The so-called Code Point U+1F917 stands for the official emoji called “Hugging Face”.

The smiling face with two open palms is also the well-known logo of the AI platform. Anyone who enters the code will receive the name of the emoji directly back. The Python code line print(chr(129303)) even outputs the small image. Observers are already joking that Nvidia has secured what is probably the most expensive emoji in the world by purchasing the company.

Nvidia reference in the purchase price

However, the guesswork didn’t end there, because the purchase amount also contains a second meaning with a direct connection to Nvidia. Users initially speculated about a combination of historical company data. Among other things, the number sequence 93 was interpreted as the founding year 1993. Observers saw the 12 as the previous issue price of the shares. Some people associated the numbers 03 with the three Nvidia founders Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky and Curtis Priem.

However, these theories turned out to be wrong. The actual solution lies in digital color theory. If you search for the code 129303 in the official register of color names, a shade of green appears that can be interpreted as Nvidia’s classic brand color.

Nvidia continues to expand its AI business

Hugging Face’s market value was estimated at at least $13 billion (around €11 billion) ahead of the deal. The platform provides a one-stop shop for pre-trained machine learning models and related developer tools. The New York-based company provides the tools that allow programmers to create, test and publish language models and image generators. With the takeover, Nvidia is strengthening its position as a leading provider of hardware and software for training corresponding applications. The integration of the platform is intended to further strengthen the company’s own ecosystem.
