Chinese Giant Officially Reveals Why Xiaomi 14 Pro Used Titanium

Xiaomi has once again raised the bar in the smartphone industry with the release of its Xiaomi 14 Pro Titanium Edition. This special edition has garnered significant attention for its use of titanium metal, a material that is not commonly seen in the smartphone market. Xiaomi’s choice to use titanium, a material with a purity of 99% TA-2, is a testament to the company’s commitment to innovation and quality.

Why Titanium?

Xiaomi states via Chinese sources that the decision to use titanium over more common materials such as stainless steel is rooted in the metal’s unique properties. Titanium is widely used in high-end applications such as aerospace, medical equipment, and sports gear due to its lightweight nature, high strength, and corrosion resistance. These properties make it an ideal choice for a smartphone that is both durable and elegant.

The Engineering Challenge

Xiaomi’s internal engineers conducted simulations to compare the use of stainless steel with titanium for the Xiaomi 14 Pro’s mid-frame. Even with a weight-reduction approach using an aluminum alloy lining, a stainless steel frame would have added an extra 8.34 grams to the phone’s weight. The use of titanium, however, ensures that the phone remains light without compromising on strength.

Processing Hardening: A Hidden Benefit

One of the unique features of titanium is its “work hardening” property. This means that the material becomes harder at the bent parts, making the corners of the Xiaomi 14 Pro’s mid-frame even more robust after bending and shaping. This characteristic also provides an invisible advantage: during a fall, the hardness of the material increases instantaneously, offering additional protection.

Aesthetic and Durability Enhancements

Xiaomi has applied a 2μm PVD ceramic coating to the surface of the TA-2 titanium metal. This not only significantly improves the phone’s resistance to wear and corrosion but also enhances its aesthetic appeal, giving it a premium look and feel.

The Xiaomi 14 Series: A Milestone in Sales

The Xiaomi 14 series has already hit the market and achieved impressive sales figures, with over a million units sold. This success is a testament to Xiaomi’s ability to deliver high-quality devices that resonate with consumers.

The Xiaomi 14 Pro Titanium Edition is a remarkable example of Xiaomi’s engineering prowess and design philosophy. The use of titanium metal not only sets a new standard for smartphone construction but also reflects the company’s dedication to providing consumers with innovative and high-quality products.
