Sony Ends Integration Of X/Twitter With PS4 and PS5

Sony has recently announced that it will discontinue the integration of X (formerly known as Twitter) on its PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. This change, set to take effect on November 13, 2023, will remove the ability for gamers to share content directly to X from their PlayStation consoles, including gameplay activities, trophies, and other related content.

The integration feature, which has been a part of the PlayStation experience since the PS4’s launch in 2013, was initially celebrated for its ease of sharing gaming moments with the world. The PS4’s DualShock 4 controller even introduced a dedicated Share button, allowing players to quickly capture screenshots or gameplay clips and post them to Twitter with minimal effort. This functionality also provided a convenient method for players to transfer their gaming captures to their phones or PCs.

However, the feature’s removal seems to have been met with indifference by the PlayStation community. A thread on the PS5 subreddit suggests that many users were unaware that the feature was still available, indicating that its usage may have declined significantly. This could be partly due to the fact that Sony added the ability to access game captures through the official PlayStation app last year, providing an alternative method for players to manage their screenshots and videos.

Sony’s decision follows similar moves by other console manufacturers. Microsoft removed Twitter integration from its Xbox consoles and the Game Bar on Windows in April, although users can still share their achievements on Twitter via the Xbox app. Nintendo, often ahead of the curve in such matters, removed Facebook and Twitter login options for the Switch last year.

The backdrop to these changes is the turbulent period for X/Twitter since its acquisition by Elon Musk over a year ago. The platform’s valuation has reportedly halved since the takeover, despite Musk’s public defense of the purchase. In a conversation with Joe Rogan, Musk justified his acquisition as a move to counteract what he calls the “woke mind virus.”

As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the ways in which players share their gaming experiences are also changing. While direct social media integration may be losing its place on gaming consoles, players still have a plethora of options to connect and share their digital achievements with friends and the broader gaming community.
