Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is Here – What to Expect and Where to Play

When Cyberpunk 2077 launched back in 2020, it was something of a red-hot mess. There were plenty of game-breaking bugs and performance issues that made the game practically unplayable on older hardware.

A lot has happened since then and the developers at CD Projekt RED have put in huge efforts to make the game a success – and it has paid off. The game’s overall review rating on Steam now stands at a solid ‘very positive’ as gamers get ready for Phantom Liberty, the first (and only) major DLC expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.

What’s New in Phantom Liberty?

The Phantom Liberty DLC is released along with a major 2.0 update of the base game. Phantom Liberty is paid DLC, but the 2.0 update is available as a free download for all Cyberpunk 2077 owners.

What makes the update worth mentioning in this context is that it introduces some fundamental changes to the base game that are also key to the Phantom Liberty experience. A few examples include vehicle combat, a new police system, and an overhaul of the Perk tree, all of which are accessible in the base game.

As for Phantom Liberty, this DLC adds about 20 hours of content that is characterized as a “spy-thriller adventure,” which kicks off with the player character having to rescue the US president. The player character will partner with FIA agent Solomon Reed, played by Idris Elba, while Keanu Reeves reprises his role as Johnny Silverhand. Also, an all-new area called Dogtown is added to the game.

How and Where to Play

For console gamers, Phantom Liberty is available on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. It will however not arrive on the PlayStation 4, which barely has enough performance to run the base game.

The PC version is available via Steam or GOG as usual and is also the best-looking way to play Phantom Liberty. If your system is fast enough, that is. Ahead of downloading the DLC along with the 2.0 update, PC gamers should note that CD Project RED has increased the system requirements.

Recommended hardware for 60 FPS at 1080p now includes:

  • CPU: Core i7-12700 or Ryzen 7 5800X3D.
  • GPU: RTX 2070 Super or RX 5700 XT or Arc A770.
  • RAM: 16 GB.

With raytracing enabled, the requirements for 1080p/60 increase to:

  • CPU: Core i9-12900 or Ryzen 9 7900X.
  • GPU: RTX 3080 Ti or RX 7900 XTX.
  • RAM: 20 GB

The requirements for higher settings and/or resolutions now also include 70 GB of fast NVMe storage. This was not mentioned in the base game requirements, where any SSD would do and the CPU recommendations topped out at a Core i7-4790 or Ryzen 5 3600.

If you don’t mind playing the game with low settings at 30 FPS, the minimum GPU is now a GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 580, plus a Core i7-6700 or Ryzen 5 1600 CPU.

However, according to CD Projekt RED, the game will not become unplayable on hardware that meets the previous minimum requirements, but older hardware will no longer be actively supported.
