The Digital Market Act by the EU is forcing major tech giants to make some significant changes within the premises of the European Union. Like other tech companies, Apple is also bound to introduce modifications in an effort to seamlessly work in the region. Recently, the company has announced a new request form.
With the help of this form, developers of iOS apps that are distributed within the European Union will be able to request more synchronization with iPhone hardware and software features. Currently, Apple provides developers with access to more than 250,000 APIs. With these APIs, developers can access several features and frameworks of the iPhone, like Bluetooth, Healthcare, microphones, SiriKit, cameras, and more.
As of now, when creating apps in the EU, developers are free to ask for access to new iPhone capabilities and technology. According to the company, the interoperability requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Eventually, Apple will roll out additional APIs as per the future version of iOS. The company details that the requests should be technically feasible. In short, developers need to stick to the Digital Market Act.
There are no details on how many requests will be approved by the company. In addition to the EU, the company has provided access to iPhones’ NFC chips to third-party payment and wallet apps in Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein. It will enable users to use other options besides Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. The recent change was rolled out with iOS 17.4. It is currently in the beta phase. It is anticipated to be released in March.
