Discord integration for consoles continues to progress. After Microsoft has already equipped the Xbox Series X/S with the popular voice chat, Sony should soon follow with the PlayStation 5 (PS5). New clues from the app’s code now suggest this.
Despite Sony’s financial involvement in Discord, the Japanese have not yet managed to adapt voice chat, which is particularly popular among gamers, for their PS5 game console. “Go to a voice channel to try it out! Chat with Discord Voice on your PS5, show what games you’re currently playing, and much more” says the Discord source code, which was searched by data miners for PlayStation references.
It is unclear whether Discord will appear natively for the PlayStation 5 or whether a transfer between the smartphone or desktop app and the Sony console will have to take place, as in the first few weeks on the Xbox Series X/S. Currently, the published code suggests a transfer function, but it could also be offered as an alternative to directly entering voice channels and quickly switching between smartphone, desktop, and console.
Almost all indications also point to a Discord integration exclusively for the PlayStation 5. Only a single line of code suggests that the PS4 could possibly also be supplied, which can still be found in many living rooms due to the often chaotic delivery situation of the PS5. Interested players can currently connect their PSN account to Discord as a precaution in order to prepare for the integration. According to rumors, access will be activated with firmware update 7.0 in March 2023.
