Elon Musk announces Steam games for Tesla Cars

Tesla boss Elon Musk wants to further expand the playing field in his electric cars. To this end, the carmaker is pursuing the integration of the Steam gaming platform. A first demo could be presented as early as next month and bridge the waiting time at the charging station. So far, Tesla drivers have been able to while away the time charging with titles such as Cuphead, Stardew Valley, Fallout Shelter, or Beach Buggy Racing 2. Games can also be found on smartphones.

But the hardware of Tesla’s Media Control Unit (MCU) is definitely more powerful. The partnership with AMD (Ryzen + RDNA 2) allows the third generation of the infotainment system to deliver performance that can even keep up with Sony’s PlayStation 5 thanks to 10.3 TeraFLOPS. That’s why Musk is aiming for something higher than just mobile games.

Soon FIFA, Call of Duty, via Steam in the Tesla?

At the beginning of this year, the American entrepreneur already announced a partnership with Steam, which is now showing further progress. Musk announced via Twitter that they would most likely be ready to present the first demo next month.

What games will flicker across Tesla screens in the future, however, is as unclear as the effort developers will have to make to adapt their titles for the Tesla operating system. For some time now, playing games has only been possible when the e-car is parked. Following a complaint to US authorities, an update removed the “Passenger Play” option that allowed passengers to access Tesla’s arcade game library while driving.

However, the upcoming Steam upgrade should not only be interesting for longer waiting times at the charging station but also offer an interesting pastime for future fully autonomous driving. Until then, the Steam library will continue to grow, especially after EA and Microsoft decided a few years ago to release titles like FIFA 22, F1 22, Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5, and Co. not only publish on its own but also offer it on Valve’s distribution platform.
