Epic Games Store and Steam Crossplay is coming soon

The Epic Games Store has lured many with free games, but you can’t cross-play them with friends who play on other platforms until now. As a first step, Epic Games and Steam will be linked, and other platforms will follow shortly.

Epic Games and Steam are now cross-platform

Playing with friends on all platforms: While this has often been a dream for years, the world of crossplay has been looking a little brighter in recent years and months. Now Epic Games offers one Report with clout: New crossplay tools for game developers are now available for free. This should make it easy for developers to bring games and players together across different stores and platforms. Crossplay for PC, therefore, includes the following features in the beginning:

  • All friends in one place. Steam and Epic Games Store friends will be merged into one overlay, allowing players to see all friends in one list.
  • The integrated game invites. In-game, players can search and invite friends on Steam and the Epic Games Store, making it easy to connect and play together.
  • Link account. Onboarding without emails or password requests. With just a few clicks, Steam players can jump into a game while creating an Epic Games account for their Steam account under the hood.
  • Update-free improvements. As games are installed, the crossplay capabilities are distributed via a self-update in-game overlay. Players can enjoy new features and improvements without having to update anything themselves.

Coming soon for mobile and console

Last but not least, Epic Games is announcing ambitious plans for the future. According to this, the company is currently in the process of natively supporting other PC stores, and support for macOS and Linux is also planned. Once the implementation has taken place, you will want to focus “later” on developing crossplay on consoles and mobile platforms. It will be very interesting to see how the tools will be accepted by developers, but the first step is already promising
