Elon Musk is back in the spotlight—this time not for Tesla’s technological breakthroughs but for stirring up controversy with bold accusations. Recently, the Tesla CEO made headlines after posting on X that he believes Democratic groups and donors are orchestrating protests against Tesla.
Musk alleged that an unspecified “investigation” revealed five groups, funded through the Democratic donation platform ActBlue, are behind the growing demonstrations. He named organizations like the “Troubleakers,” the “Disruption Project,” and the “Democratic Socialists of America” as culprits, along with prominent Democratic supporters such as George Soros and Reid Hoffman.
However, a report from Forbes calls Musk’s claims into question. According to the report, there is no evidence to back up the investigation Musk cited. Additionally, Musk’s characterization of ActBlue is misleading. ActBlue is a Democratic fundraising platform that facilitates contributions for candidates and causes but does not directly fund groups or activities.
In recent weeks, protests against Tesla have gained traction, coinciding with Musk’s role in the newly formed Facility for Government Efficiency (Doge). Created in January 2025, this initiative focuses on radical budget cuts and layoffs in the public sector. Musk, serving as an advisor and “special government employee,” has faced backlash for his influence, particularly regarding mass layoffs of federal workers.
The protests, organized under the banner “Tesla Takedown,” include peaceful demonstrations, creative campaigns, and, in isolated instances, vandalism targeting Tesla properties. Activists are calling for boycotts of Tesla vehicles and shares. This unrest has contributed to a sharp decline in Tesla’s stock price and sales, particularly in Europe, during the first months of the year. Many critics attribute this downturn to Musk’s overt political involvement and his alignment with right-wing policies.
Musk’s reaction to the protests follows a well-worn pattern. Rather than addressing the protests’ root causes, he has resorted to unfounded conspiracy theories, targeting political opponents. His accusations against George Soros mirror past controversies, as Soros has long been the subject of anti-Semitic conspiracy theories portraying him as a mastermind behind global agendas.
Adding to the controversy, Musk recently made a gesture that many interpreted as a Nazi or fascist salute. The incident sparked heated debates and garnered support from neo-Nazi and far-right groups, further fueling Musk’s divisive presence in American politics.
As Musk continues to blur the lines between entrepreneur and political figure, these controversies raise questions about the impact of his actions on Tesla and his broader influence on public discourse.
