Elon Musk Reaches 100M Followers On Twitter

Twitter now boasts 100 million followers for Elon Musk, which could indicate that he is about to purchase the social media platform.

This means that Musk is now being followed by 43% of microblogging users. However, that number could be significantly different if Musk suspects that many of those accounts are bots.

Musk is still only the sixth most followed person on Twitter despite the huge number. Here are the top five.

Three years after the launch of Twitter, SpaceX’s CEO and Tesla’s Chief Executive Officer joined Twitter in 2009. He’s written around 18,500 tweets in that time span, covering a wide range of topics. Some of his tweets got him in trouble with authorities.

Musk has not shared any content on Twitter since June 22, which is odd considering it could be his longest period of silence in recent times.

His silence regarding his bid to buy the microblogging site for $44 billion is not clear. Musk had proposed the deal in April, but it has not been signed and sealed. However, Musk’s lawyer said earlier this month that if Twitter did not provide data about the number of spam and fake accounts on the platform, the billionaire entrepreneur might have to drop his bid.

Twitter, based in San Francisco, responded by giving a large trove of data. However, it is not clear if this will suffice to keep the deal on track. Analysts will need to look at the data to determine how many spam and fake accounts were on the service.

Twitter claims that spam and fake accounts account for only 5% of its users, but Musk is concerned that it could be higher. Advertisers could leave Twitter or ask for lower rates. Musk might feel pressured to reduce the buyout offer or walk away.
