Experimental FritzOS update fixes problem with IPv6 ULAs and NAS
Shortly after the most recent experimental update, AVM released another update – but the new versions only offer a few changes. There are indications that the FritzOS update could soon be released to all users.
News in the Fritz Laboratory program
The announced innovations include an increase in the number of simultaneous DECT calls, the transmission of IPv6 data via a Wireguard VPN tunnel and a new graphical representation of the FritzBox connection status. Most of these innovations can already be tried out. The new Fritz Lab is available for the FritzBoxes 7590 AX, 7590, 7530 AX and 7530. The changes for the individual devices are primarily improvements and bug fixes. We have listed the release notes for the FritzBox 7590 as an example at the end of this article.
Among other things, there were setting problems with mesh repeaters and mesh masters, as well as a bug that disrupted the assignment of IPv6 ULAs (Unique Local Address). AVM was also able to fix a bug that meant that users could not deactivate the NAS function. The fact that this update round only contains bug fixes and small changes could indicate that AVM has made a lot of progress in developing functions for the next major update. Unfortunately, there is no official schedule for the releases to all users, so one can only speculate whether the fine-tuning has already started before the final release. As always, there are some changes that are only being tested for the new FritzOS version and some that are also being presented for “old” functions outside of the laboratory updates.
FritzBox 7590 lab update
- Change: In VPN connections over IPSec, AES-192 is no longer supported as an encryption algorithm in Phase 2 SAs
Bug fixes
- In certain scenarios, a home network device may have been assigned 2 active ULAs (Unique Local Address, IPv6)
- When importing the settings (exporting the data of a FRITZ!Box with only one 2.4 GHz band) to a target box with 2.4/5/6 GHz, no SSID was adopted
- The push service “WLAN gas access” could be changed on mesh repeaters, although the settings of the mesh master are adopted for this push service
- The NAS function could not be deactivated
Tips for updating
Owners of a non-provider-bound FritzBox can download the new update immediately. Download links and tips are available from AVM on the special laboratory website Information about the update and an overview of all new features for FritzOS 7.90 can also be found there. AVM is asking the volunteer testers for feedback.
