Facebook’s AI Tool TLDR Can Quickly Summarize News Content

Facebook is creating an artificial intelligence tool called TLDR that will summarize the main points of news articles so that users don’t have to read the full story. According to the report, TLDR is an acronym for the Internet buzzword “Too long, didn’t read”. The tool will also provide audio narration of the complete article, and a voice assistant to answer questions about an article.

The social media giant has faced criticism for its role in spreading misinformation about the new crown pandemic, the 2020 US presidential election, and the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Facebook also faces multiple antitrust lawsuits due to its dominant position in social networks.

The news of TLDR was suspicious by some media members on Twitter. According to Buzzfeed News, news about the tool and other potential future products and features was posted at a year-end company-wide meeting led by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday. Facebook executives also told employees that the company is developing a neural sensor that can detect people’s thoughts and turn them into actions, and is also developing a new type of virtual reality social network called Horizon. Facebook did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
