Fake LastPass password manager software discovered on Apple’s software Store

The creators of the password manager LastPass have alerted users to the fact that a fake app called “LassPass” is appearing on the App Store. There are other password managers out there, and LastPass is just one of them, despite some controversy surrounding it. It has now released a warning about a purportedly fake version of its program.

LastPass would like to alert our customers to a fraudulent app attempting to impersonate our LastPass app on the Apple App Store,” according to a blog post. “The app in question is called ‘LassPass Password Manager’ and lists Parvati Patel as the developer.” The warning goes on, “The software tries to replicate our branding and user interface, however careful inspection of the uploaded screenshots reveals typos and other indications the app is fraudulent”.

Although this “LassPass” app’s description doesn’t quite match the actual app’s terminology, it does bear a resemblance to LastPass’s logo. Having said that, it would be because the descriptions highlight the value of password security and include features that are typical of any password manager.

However, the fact that it appears to be impersonating LastPass begs the question of whether it’s more than simply a ripoff and is a tool for future phishing attempts. In any event, it’s concerning that a clone of a highly publicized app managed to pass the App Store review team, particularly considering Apple’s contention that this procedure makes the App Store safer than unaffiliated retailers.

Rest assured, LastPass is actively working to get this application taken down as soon as possible,” according to its blog, “and will continue to monitor for fraudulent clones of our applications and/or infringements upon our intellectual property.”
