Federal Communications Chair Brendan Carr has called for an investigation into Comcast’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, according to Newsmax. Comcast spokesperson Joelle Terry confirmed to The Verge that the company is cooperating with the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) inquiries. “We have received an inquiry from the Federal Communications Commission and will be cooperating with the FCC to answer their questions,” Terry stated.
As reported by Newsmax, Carr indicated that the FCC is looking into whether Comcast’s DEI efforts have violated federal employment laws. He expressed confidence in the investigation, adding, “I expect that this investigation into Comcast and its NBCUniversal operations will aid the commission’s broader efforts to root out invidious forms of DEI discrimination across all of the sectors the FCC regulates.”
Since stepping into his role as FCC Chair last month, Carr has made waves with a controversial agenda. He has threatened to revoke broadcast licenses from companies like Disney and CBS, accusing them of airing content unfavorable to Trump and conservative values. Furthermore, Carr has launched separate investigations into NPR and PBS for allegedly “airing commercials.” Fellow FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez described these actions to The Verge as part of a Trump administration strategy to “weaponize the power of the FCC.”
Carr, a Trump appointee, also authored the FCC chapter in Project 2025, outlining plans to curb the influence of large corporations. Comcast, a major player in media, offers cable, wireless, and internet services and owns prominent properties like NBCUniversal, streaming service Peacock, and a host of other broadcasters.
