In May 2022, the company Google declared that soon the maps will feature AI and AR-powered features. The AI and AR-powered feature was termed Immersive View. The company made this announcement at the Google I/O event. Furthermore, the company stated that given this new feature, users will have the capacity to view the cities in a birds-eye view. It sounds quite similar to the one introduced by Apple i.e., Maps’ Flyover feature. Followed by this, the company declared during the Search AI event in Paris that Google Maps’ Immersive View feature is going live in five cities.
Reportedly, it is introduced in New York, San Francisco, London, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. Given this new feature, users can explore every corner and shop of the city without the requirement of paying a visit. The feature is provided with Street View as well as aerial imagery. In addition to this, it is also equipped with an AR feature.
Besides this, the app will provide the users with general information like traffic conditions, other restaurants in the area, weather, and time of day. It will be provided via the NeRF technology (Neural Radiance Fields). Basically, NeRF is an Ai technique. It works by capturing 2D shots of a place from various angles. Later these images are merged to generate a 3D representation of the location. Additionally, the company has stated that soon the feature will be introduced to Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence, and Venice.
Moreover, the company declared that the Live AR feature will be available in Barcelona, Dublin, and Madrid. In addition to this, the indoor Street View is going to receive some big updates. It will be now available across more than 1,000 new locations [airports, malls, and stations] across Barcelona Berlin, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, Melbourne, Paris, Prague, Sao Paulo, Singapore, Sydney, and Taipei in the next upcoming months.
Furthermore, the company stated that a new feature termed Glanceable Directions will be introduced. It will boost the performance of lock screen directions. Users will receive information even when their devices are locked. The feature will go live on both Android as well as iOS in the next few months.
In addition to this, EV owners will receive a better understanding of charging stations. Google Maps will provide the users with information like charging stations on the route. Moreover, it will also present the users with information like whether a particular station has the facility of EV charging or not.
