Four New iPhone Models Featuring the A18 Chip Are Revealed by the Early iOS 18 Code

Apple iOS

In addition to rolling out the new updates for iOS 17, Cupertino-based tech giant Apple is also working on the next major iOS 18 update. Based on past activity, the new version will be released in beta in June and the stable version will arrive for the general public in September. MacRumors has information on early development builds of iOS 18 and the hardware mentioned in the code, according to our sources.

Notably, the new OS has been codenamed ‘Crystal.’ It includes references to four upcoming iPhone models that are consistent with the information currently available about the iPhone 16 series. The code has the following models referenced: D47: iPhone 16, D48: iPhone 16 Plus, D93: iPhone 16 Pro, and D94: iPhone 16 Pro Max. Interestingly, there are no indications about an iPhone Ultra model, despite the previous rumors. Although it is theoretically feasible for a new model to be classified as a “D94” device, in practice, this kind of device would probably use a different identification (D95 or D94a) to distinguish itself from the hardware used in various configurations.

In addition to this, the code reveals that all members of the iPhone 16 series will feature a new system-on-chip (t8140) called Tahiti. It is the new Apple A18 chip. In contrast to this, the base model of the iPhone 15 series features the A16 chip, the same chip featured in the iPhone 14 Pro. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro is powered by the A17 chip. As compared to the A16 chip, the A17 chip is built on a 3nm platform that features an additional GPU core and improved clock speed.

Nonetheless, it appears that the main processor in the iPhone 16 range will be the same for both Pro and entry-level iPhones. Apple may choose to distinguish the chips used on different levels of iPhones, for example, by using A18 and A18 Pro branding, even if the operating system states that the same t8140 chip is utilized for the whole iPhone 16 range. Furthermore, the new OS indicates that the upcoming series will include a Broadcom Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module. There are no further details, given the fact that the operating system is in its early developmental stages.
