FritzBox Now monitors power consumption with SE 250 Model

With the FRITZ! Smart Energy 250, AVM is launching a new current sensor. The 89-euro device can be attached to digital current counters using a magnet and enables detailed power consumption analyzes via the local Fritzbox.

Energy consumption and monitoring for the smart home

The Berlin network specialist AVM is expanding its smart home portfolio with a new current sensor. The FRITZ! Smart Energy 250 enables households more precisely monitoring their electricity consumption by reading consumption data directly from the digital electricity meter and transferring it to a Fritzbox via DECT radio. The installation is comparatively simple: the sensor is attached to the digital electricity meter with an integrated magnet and opens its electricity either via two AA batteries or a USB-C connection. The device captures the consumption data via the infrared interface of the meters and transfers it into the home network.

Technical details and security

The sensor uses the DECT school technology for transmission. According to the manufacturer, communication is encrypted throughout. In battery operation, the device reaches a term of up to two years, depending on the selected measuring frequency. The integrated memory can temporarily store up to 30 days of consumption data if the connection to the FritzBox is temporarily interrupted.

Users can view their consumption data in real time via the FRITZ! App Smart Home, the Fritzos or the online service Myfritz. Long -term analysis is particularly valuable: the data collected can be compared for weeks, months or years, which makes it easier to identify savings options. The Smart Home software from AVM also enables automated if-then rules to be created.

A practical example: produces the domestic photovoltaic system excess energy, a smart socket can automatically start the washing machine. The control of heat pumps or the management of e-car charging stations can also be optimized.

Availability and Requirements

A FRITZBOX with DECT function and Fritzos 8 (or higher) is required for the operation. Alternatively, the sensor also works with a FRITZ! DECT Repeater 100 or a FRITZ! Smart Gateway. The compatibility with most of the digital current meters installed in Germany is given, a detailed list can be found on the Manufacturer’s website. The FRITZ! Smart Energy 250 is available promptly. With a price of 89 euros, AVM positions itself in the middle price segment for smart home energy sensors.
