FSR 4 also for older Radeon GPUs: AMD is working on compatibility

In an interview, AMD revealed that it is working on bringing the new AI upsampling technology to the RX 7000 series. However, Ma expresses herself quite cautiously. When and whether this will actually happen is not yet certain.

New AI upsampling for older graphics cards?

At CES 2025, AMD talked about its new RDNA 4 graphics cards and presented some information about the new architecture. However, the material only scratched the surface in many areas. Some details even caused confusion. It was unclear which graphics cards would actually support the upcoming FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4).

In one interview AMD’s gaming boss Frank Azor then revealed a little more with Mexican tech YouTuber Michael Quesada. First of all, he made it clear that FSR 4 will be available on all upcoming Radeon cards in the RX 9000 series. However, Azor then made a statement that made many sit up and take notice. According to the manager, AMD is also working on getting the new upsampling technology to work on older RDNA 3 cards. However, a lot of work is still needed, says Azor. Work that you want to face.

Actual implementation uncertain

FSR 4 requires quite a lot of computing power. Therefore, the technology is initially only available on the new graphics cards. RDNA 3 cards already have the necessary AI units, but they are less powerful compared to those in the new models. A lot of optimization is necessary here to achieve compatibility with FSR 4.

However, how long it will take to get FSR 4 running on cards in the 7000 series and whether it will even be successful to a satisfactory extent is still completely open at the moment. It would also be conceivable that this is only possible with the more powerful cards in the series. Owners should therefore not rely on the new AI upsampling being supported by their RDNA 3 graphics cards in the future.

Detailed presentation

According to AMD, FSR 4 will be presented in detail together with RDNA 4 at a special event. However, there is no exact date for this yet. According to rumors, the first two cards, the Radeon RX 9070 XT and RX 9070, will hit stores in January.
