Geekbench: Microsoft Surface 2 Duo Will Be Equipped With Snapdragon 888

Microsoft is apparently working on the folding smartphone Surface Duo 2 with a Snapdragon 888 chip. That comes from a recent entry on Geekbench. This would make the successor to Microsoft’s business device significantly faster.

The first-generation Surface Duo has been on the market since autumn 2020 and relies on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 platform, which has been optimized for use on the device with two displays. However, voices were already loud at the market launch that felt the processor was too old and insufficient for the new Android folding smartphone and were therefore right. When the Surface Duo went on sale, other mobile platforms had long since overtaken the hardware.

Now it looks like Microsoft might make this mistake a second time. According to a media report, the successor, the Surface Duo 2, shows up in a Geekbench listing with the Snapdragon 888 chipset. Although these are current, they can also be found in flagship models that will or have already appeared on the market in 2021. There is still no talk of a release of the Surface Duo 2.

But what you can read from the entry on Geekbench sounds good. The Duo 2 is listed there with 8GB of RAM and it runs with Android 11. Everything indicates that the hardware of the second generation will be significantly faster. The chipset was classified as “ARM Implementer 65 Architecture 8 Variant 1 Part 3396 Revision 0”. It has been rumored before that Microsoft will rely on the Snapdragon 888 and now that seems to be the confirmation.

Geekbench Results

The benchmark results of 1091 for single-core and 3517 for multi-core are significantly better than the first-generation Surface Duo. You are also under the results of other smartphones with this chipset. A number of new features are expected for the new folding smartphone. This includes 5G and NFC support as well as a heavily redesigned camera. But when all this will come is unknown. From the rumor mill, however, it was already heard that Microsoft has planned a Surface event in October.
