Microsoft solves Azure problem: Updates and Store are running again

After a widespread failure of the Azure infrastructure, central Windows services are working again. Users and administrators can now download updates and store content as usual. The disruption lasted for several hours.

Fixed a problem with Azure

An outage in the Azure infrastructure has led to restrictions on core Windows services worldwide. Those affected included Windows Update, the Microsoft Update Catalog and the Microsoft Store. In corporate networks, administrators also reported problems with Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). Downloads were sometimes delayed or aborted. The incident came in a week of further disruption in the IT industry, after Meta was previously hit by global accessibility issues. WSUS has also had repeated difficulties in the past.

Services are running normally again

The fix is complete. As Microsoft communicated, all services are working smoothly again. During the outage, traffic was gradually rerouted to restore availability. References to the incident have been moved to history in the status pages. Windows Update, Microsoft Update Catalog, Microsoft Store and WSUS are working normally again. Canceled downloads can be restarted.

Cloud dependency is increasing

Modern operating systems are closely linked to cloud services; Azure is the central infrastructure for numerous applications. The failure highlights the dependence on such systems. While updates usually take place in the background, disruptions can interrupt the connection. Microsoft operates one of the largest server infrastructures in the world.

Malfunctions are rare, but have noticeable effects due to the widespread use of Windows 10 and 11. Regular updates remain crucial for system security. The incident remains documented on the Windows Release Health page. The Microsoft 365 and Azure status pages are currently not reporting any disruptions. Updates can be distributed again without restrictions.
