German Startup Lilium Will Launch All electric Flying Taxi By 2019

German Startup Lilium has just raised $90 million in funds to develop a five-seat all electric flying taxi. The raised funding will be used on building five-seat commercial Lilium Jet, more people would be employed to make a team of more than 70 people.

According to the company’s description fully charged jets would be able to travel for an hour with speeds excessing 180 miles per hour, so if you have to travel from London to Leeds you can reach your destination within an hour. The Air Taxi will also offer an on-demand option where users can order the taxi to pick up from the nearby landing pad.

The latest funding round secures total investment of $100 million for Lilium, the company has received $10 million seed investment last year. The latest funding round has unveiled some familiar names from the tech industry that already got fame with their earlier startups.

Investors include; Tencent, Skype co-founder Niklas Atomico, Twitter co-founder Ev Williams, Obvious Ventures and a private banking group LGT.

Lilium co-founder and CEO Daniel Wiegand said, “This is the next stage in our rapid evolution from an idea to the production of commercially successful aircraft that will completely revolutionize the way we travel in and around the world cities.”

According to Verge, it seems the technology would take us to pilotless flight in the near future, but most people surveyed are unwilling to travel in a pilotless plane even if it costs a lot less.

The startup is still looking quite promising, during April Lilium has announced its first test flight of its all-electric two-seat vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) prototype which was pretty successful.

Lilium is expecting to launch its first fully functional crewed jet to take off by 2019.
