A really annoying problem is currently causing a flood of new appointment entries for Google Calendar users: a bug means that the automatic recognition of appointments in emails is faulty so almost every email generates a new entry.
This is currently being reported by users worldwide and they are extremely frustrated. You can find complaints about the suddenly appearing problem in various forums. According to the 9to5Google, the problem seems to have been known since December 23rd.
First, users noticed that they had new appointments in their Google Calendar that didn’t seem to make any sense – for example, an entry from newsletters, weather reports, and other emails that did not bring any appointment announcements.
This bug appears to be widespread and basically creates completely random events, often set as all-day events since Google doesn’t detect timestamps in emails.
There is no clear pattern for this error, but it seems that emails with dates can be a trigger, for example, “December 25 weather” or “December 24 newsletter.” The cause is not yet known. But there is a temporary solution. Affected Google Calendar users should simply disable the feature temporarily. To do this, select the calendar (on the web), look for the Google Calendar settings, and disable automation.
