Google Introduces New Contact Photo Customization Options

Back in 2024, Google made a controversial change to Google Messages by overriding user-selected contact photos and replacing them with the contact’s Google account avatars if the two profiles were linked. This move didn’t sit well with users, especially those who had carefully chosen specific photos for their contacts for easy identification.

Fast forward to earlier this year, Google finally addressed the backlash by allowing users to revert their Google Messages contact photos back to their preferred settings, without the forced Google account integration. Now, the tech giant is taking things a step further, introducing more ways to customize contact photos.

You can now assign emojis and monograms as contact pictures. While this isn’t directly connected to a Google Messages update, the contact photos you personalize will show up in Google Messages for linked contacts. According to Android Authority, these new customization options are rolling out in Google Contacts version 4.48.27.720364420. However, not all users with this version have access yet, suggesting a gradual rollout.

The updated customization features include the ability to assign a one- or two-letter monogram for a contact, with options to tweak the font and background color. If you’d rather add a personal touch with an emoji, you can choose one from your keyboard’s extensive list. You’ll also find options to adjust the background colors and even toggle a monochrome mode. For those looking for inspiration, a convenient “inspire me” button generates creative combinations of fonts, emojis, and background colors automatically.

While this feature isn’t groundbreaking, it’s a welcome addition for users who enjoy adding a personal and creative touch to their contacts. With these visual updates, communication on Google Messages is set to get a little more colorful and fun.
