Google May Bring a New Under-display Camera Smartphone

Google is reportedly working on a new smartphone, probably a Pixel device, with an under-screen selfie camera. The company, in fact, filed a patent application with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) last September for this smartphone. The name of this device is still unrevealed.

So if you’re wondering what is big deal here, you should read this piece of news till the end.

First of, when the camera is under-screen, it would eliminate the need for a notch or a punch-hole, allowing manufacturers to reduce the size of a phone’s bezels to create an edge-to-edge screen. Now, look at the image of this upcoming phone and the one you’re holding.

According to a source, the patent Google filed describes a device with a full-screen display, a front-facing camera with other sensors under the display, and a second screen is placed on the rear side (the image above is definitely not the one we are talking about).

Moreover, when the camera (and most probably the main screen) is not in use, the rear screen would display incoming notifications. We also hear that the small auxiliary display contains an ambient sensor, a proximity sensor and/or an IR sensor.

Talking about the in-display camera, you might already have a device like this. We have the ZTE Axon 20 that uses this technology. Then we have other manufacturers including Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo that may launch devices this year using an under-screen selfie camera.
