Google Photos new feature that significantly improves usage

Google Photos is introducing a new feature that allows users to delete cloud backups without losing the files on the device. The “Undo Backup” feature promises easier cloud storage management and is initially rolling out to iOS users.

Efficient cloud storage for Google Photos

Google Photos presents an innovative solution to a long-standing problem for many users: The new “Undo Backup” function makes it possible to delete cloud backups without losing the corresponding files on the device. This innovation promises significantly more efficient management of cloud storage and improved control over the backed up data.

The feature, which is initially being rolled out to iOS users, addresses a common source of frustration. Previously, there was a risk that when you deleted images in Google Photos, the local copies on the device also disappeared. The new process is pleasantly straightforward: users can remove all backups from their current device with just a few clicks without affecting local files.

Easy to use

A Google support post explains how to easily use the new function. Users navigate to Settings in the Google Photos app, select “Backup” and then “Undo backup for this device.” After confirming a disclaimer, all cloud backups of the device will be deleted while the local files remain untouched. Particularly practical: After the backups have been deleted, the function is automatically deactivated for the device in question.

This prevents accidental future uploads and gives users full control over their cloud data. For users who frequently switch between devices or have accidentally uploaded entire photo libraries, this is a welcome relief. While iOS users can already enjoy the new function, Android users still have to be patient. Google has announced that the feature will be available for Android devices “soon,” but without giving a specific date.
