Google Trends had a makeover and you might love it

Google Trends has updated its feature set and design to provide a “simpler navigation and more ways to explore data and stories around one of the world’s biggest journalistic datasets,” says Google’s Gavri Smith. Google Trends was launched back in 2006.  The real reason for this upgrade in design is to help journalists build stories around data they can dig down in this tool. The changes in Google Trends include, a revamped trending search section which shows what is trending in the search boxes-on a day by day and minute by minute basis. There is also a new section where you can find stories curated by the News Lab team.

According to the team, this redesign puts “more editorial data-based stories up front,” along with a section featuring data stories picked out by a news team. There is a new way to get to the Year in Search data dating back to 2001, so you can see the changes in pattern of searches over time in the world. There are also new infographics, such as intensity map which helps in comparing different topics in a much more meaningful way than before. You can still access the real-time trendsdaily trends and explore page. The real-time data is probably the most amazing part of the redesign. You can access that in the Trending Searches section. You have to make sure you click over to real-time instead of the daily trend. You can click on any item in the list to get search data over time. If it’s not the current but the past that interests you, the home page has quick access to Google’s Year in Search reports from  2001 to 2017.
