Google TV axes more free TV channels from Freeplay

Google TV users in the US get access to a unique perk called Freeplay, a dedicated app offering free live TV channels. While this feature is exclusive to the US, it frequently updates its channel lineup, adding and removing options based on availability. Recently, Freeplay made some changes again, removing three channels while bringing back two others.

According to 9to5Google, Google TV Freeplay has removed the following holiday-themed channels:

  • Xumo Holiday Movie Channel
  • Xumo Holiday Classics
  • Xumo Christian Christmas

These channels were introduced during the holiday season, so their removal isn’t a shock as we move further away from the festive period. On the bright side, Freeplay has reinstated two previously removed channels:

  • Out TV Proud
  • Shades of Black

However, not all is perfectly updated. Google’s support page, which lists available Freeplay channels, still shows Xumo Holiday Classics at the time of writing, and the recently reinstated Out TV Proud is missing from the list. This could indicate that the support page hasn’t been updated yet.

An Ever-Changing Channel Lineup

This marks the second time Google TV has shuffled its Freeplay catalog this month, which can be frustrating for regular viewers of the affected channels. While it’s likely that more channels will be added and removed over time, Google rarely announces these updates, leaving users to rely on the support page for the latest information.

With over 170 free channels just a few months ago, Freeplay’s catalog has now dropped to around 160. The frequent updates make it tricky to get a clear count of what’s available, but one thing remains consistent: Freeplay continues to be a strong option for users who want free, ad-supported TV channels.

Though the changes can be inconvenient, they’re a small tradeoff for free live TV. If you’re a Google TV Freeplay user, keep an eye on updates and enjoy the evolving lineup of channels as it adapts to the seasons and audience preferences.
